Tax reforms 'will create 113k new jobs in Canada'

09 March 2010
Tax reforms 'will create 113k new jobs in Canada'An estimated 113,000 new jobs will be generated by the launch of a harmonized sales tax (HST) in British Columbia, a study claims.

The government-commissioned document suggests the positions will be created over the next ten years once the legislation comes into effect on July 1st, the Vancouver Sun reports.

According to the 14-page commentary, which was seen by the news source before publication, the forthcoming reforms "will have a profound effect on capital investment, jobs, and incomes in the province".

Conducted by public policy chair of the University of Calgary and fiscal policy expert Jack Mintz, the research notes that barriers to investment will be significantly reduced by an HST, potentially generating an additional $11.5 billion in funding by British Columbia companies over the coming decade and creating new jobs.

The tax has proven controversial as it combines the current provincial sales tax with the goods and services tax, but Mr Mintz questioned assertions that it will increase prices for consumers.

Last month, Canadian MP for the New Democratic Party Yvon Godin called on the government to extend its provision of unemployment insurance, warning that over 500,000 workers were close to exhausting their existing entitlements.ADNFCR-1275-ID-19657672-ADNFCR
