Australian transport employment up

03 March 2010
Australian transport employment upEmployment in Australia's transport and storage sector went up last month, according to new figures.

A report by the Australian Industry Group, Commonwealth Bank and supported by markit found job numbers also increased in the personal and recreational services industry.

Overall, the country saw employment fall - its seasonally-adjusted sub-index rose 2.2 points to reach 47.9 - although this pace of growth is slower than was recorded in January.

Despite the biggest falls being experienced in the retail trade and business and communications areas of the market, employment levels were unchanged in accommodation, cafes and restaurants, finance and insurance - the latter two of which fell in the month before.

However, the pace of wage growth eased during February, falling 2.8 points to 55.9.

The statistics come days after South Australia premier Mike Rann set a target of 100,000 jobs to be created in the region over the next six years.
